​Science Education

The Queens College Program of Secondary Science Education maintains National Science Teacher Association recognition. The Secondary Science Education program offers an integrated, broad-based, challenging educational experience with the intellectual, experimental, and on-line interactive skills necessary to perform effectively in any field related to our candidates’ chosen major. Our undergraduate program offers B.A. degrees in Chemistry Education, Biology Education, Physics Education, and Geology Education that lead to initial New York State certification. Our three graduate programs offer a combination of initial and professional secondary science teacher certifications. The Post-Baccalaureate Advanced Certificate Program is designed for graduate students with strong science preparation who have little or no professional courses in education.  It consists of pre-Masters graduate education courses that culminate in two clinically-rich semesters of student teaching at the middle and high school levels.  The successful completion of college and state requirements lead to initial New York State certification. Students who complete the Post-Baccalaureate Advanced Certificate Program commonly continue their studies by applying to the MSED program to obtain professional certification. The MSED in Secondary Science Education is designed for teachers who have an initial New York State Teaching Certificate in science. The MSED degree consists of graduate credits divided equally between advanced professional education courses and graduate courses in the traditional sciences. Students who want to complete a program that offers the opportunity to obtain initial and professional certification may consider the MAT program. The MAT program is a combination of graduate-level coursework in secondary education, science content, pedagogical science content knowledge, and a two semester clinically-rich student teaching experience at the middle and high school levels. The intent of each program is to graduate students who have a strong base of science content knowledge and solid pedagogical content knowledge based in research, theory, and practice.
