Teacher Professional Development and Community Workshops Overview
The Metropolitan Monarch Alliance Teacher Professional Development and Community Workshop provides participants with the training and the tools to raise monarch butterflies in the classroom, to adapt a versatile interdisciplinary suite of inquiry-based learning activities aligned with the NYS Common Core (grades 1-6), and to supervise grade-appropriate research projects with monarch butterflies in the classroom or school garden. Teachers will also be introduced to measures that they and their classes can take to help monarch populations. All the participants will receive story books and curriculum guides to help integrate activities into their regular curriculum. Everyone will go home with a half dozen native milkweed plants, a small rearing enclosure (cage), and a voucher for live Monarch caterpillars that will allow them to raise some Monarch Butterflies with their students.
In addition to the activities listed above, participants will be introduced to the typical habitats, plants, and wildlife associated with monarch butterflies in NYC and to the ongoing environmental harms and risks that endanger the species including climate change, habitat loss, and invasive species. Teachers will also be introduced to measures that they and their classes can take to help monarch populations. Participants will learn how to use the Journey North citizen science program to track Monarch Butterfly migration from Mexico to New York City and back each year and to coordinate the release of their class’s Monarch Butterflies with the passing migration. Interested teachers will receive support to establish butterfly and pollinator gardens on their school grounds.
In addition, participants will become part of Queens College GLOBE NY Metro network and will receive ongoing support for their activities involving Monarch butterflies.
Workshops are free.
Breakfast is provided at 8:30 AM.
