The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant
The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to eligible undergraduate and graduate students who are completing or plan to complete coursework needed to begin a career in teaching. The amount of the award is based on the number of credits registered for in each semester.
Please note, due to the federal sequester, for any 2024-25 TEACH Grant first disbursed on or after October 1, 2024, and before October 1, 2025, the maximum award of $4,000 is reduced by 5.7% ($228), resulting in a maximum award of $3,772.
A Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant is different from other federal student grants because it requires you agree to complete a teaching service obligation as a condition for receiving the grant, and if you don’t complete the service obligation, the TEACH Grant will be converted to a loan that you must repay, with interest.
TEACH Grant eligibility requirements
- Students must be matriculated into a high need subject area program. Please see current list below.
- Students must be registered for courses.
- Students must have a GPA of 3.25 or greater. (For the first semester graduate students, you will need to have a GPA of 3.25 or greater from your undergraduate degree. You may also qualify with a score within the 75th presenile on any part of a standardized exam ex. GRE, Exam must have been taken within the last 5 years.)
As a condition for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve in which you agree to (among other requirements) to teach
- in a high-needs field;
- at an elementary school, secondary school, or educational service agency that serves students from low-income families;
- for at least four complete academic years within eight years after completing (or ceasing enrollment in) the course of study for which you received the grant.
- To apply for certification within 120 days of graduation.
Important
If you do not complete your service obligation, all TEACH Grant funds you received will be converted to a Direct Unsubsidized Loan. You must then repay this loan to the U.S. Department of Education, with interest charged from the date the TEACH Grant was disbursed (paid to you or on your behalf).
