What is the SBDI Internship Program?
The Small Business Development Initiative (SBDI) is funded by US Representative Grace Meng (NY-6), and administered by the School of Business at Queens College. The SBDI aims to engage with small businesses located in Queens, specifically the 6th Congressional District (link a district map). Additionally, the SBDI identifies internship opportunities with small businesses for Queens College students.
What is the SBDI Small Business Internship Program?
The SBDI Small Business Internship Program places students in local small businesses so they can learn more about these businesses and how they operate. Ultimately, students valuable experience at the conclusion of the program.
What are the details of the Small Business Internship Program?
Selected students commit to 120 total hours, which is broken down to 10 hours per week over a 12 week period. Students work under a direct supervisor and are required to attend quarterly one-on-one meetings with the SBDI manager to measure progress. Students receive a stipend for their services, which is paid by the SBDI. Students also receive a certificate of completion at the end of the program
What are the prerequisites of this program?
Students are recommended to be in either their freshman or sophomore year, or juniors with no internship experience. Students are required to complete the Career Readiness Course (see link), a 6 week course, prior to applying for the internship program.
What happens after I sign up for the program?
You will be asked to provide a resume for review. Upon review, you may be asked to attend a resume-writing workshop to revise your resume and resubmit. Your resume will then be shared with participating small businesses, who will then contact you for an interview. If you are selected for a placement, you will be notified by the SBDI. You will then be required to formally accept the offer. Upon acceptance, you will be required to attend a brief orientation.
What is the Orientation?
The orientation is a virtual group meeting hosted by the SBDI manager. This orientation will familiarize you with the details of the Internship Program. Upon attendance of this orientation, you will receive access to a LinkedIn Learning Pathway course that touches on the core competencies of the career readiness. You will be highly recommended to complete this at your own pace prior to the start date of your internship.
What happens after I complete the program?
Upon successful completion of the internship program, you will receive a certificate of completion. You will be able to share this credential on your resume. Furthermore, you will continue to receive updates from the SBDI.
