Japanese Film & Culture

Location: Tokyo, Japan

In this series lecture seminar, you will take an in-depth look at the dynamic Japanese world of film. Your course director, Mr. Tsukasa Ariyoshi, who has over forty years of experience as a film producer, buyer, distributor, and promoter, will provide you with a healthy sense of the professionalism, dedication, and skill that so characterizes the vibrant Japanese film industry.

Program Perks:

  • No prior film experience or knowledge of Japanese or Japanese film is required
  • The program starts off with a 5-day group seaside retreat in Kyonan, Chiba dedicated to introducing you to Japanese culture
  • Personalized tour of Toho Film Studio (the studio for Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai and Ishiro Honda’s Godzilla) with a lecture from the former President of Toho Studio
  • A lecture from a Japanese film professional on Anime
  • A visit to the largest sitting Buddha in Japan, a Matsuri performance with taiko drumming, a trip to the Studio Ghibli museum, and a cultural tour from Asakusa’s old town

Japanese Music and Culture

Location: Tokyo, Japan

In this series lecture seminar, you will explore the music world of Japan with Mr. Yukio Kobayashi who has over forty years of experience in the Japanese music industry, working closely with popular and independent Japanese bands and musicians. You will receive lectures on Japanese music history, elements of Japanese music across musical genres, and writing about Japanese music. Featured guests include prominent musicians, DJs, and music producers in anime, independent, and mainstream music. You will spend time in a recording studio, take a site visit to a music production company, and experience live house music. By course end, you will have gained a healthy sense of the professionalism, dedication, and skill that so characterizes the Japanese music industry.

Program Perks:

– Programs are open to all undergraduate students only from all CUNY campuses with one semester completed

– Minimum 2.5 GPA required and no financial/academic holds

– Some programs may require travel on Fridays and weekends

– Students receive both credit and grade
