1. How do I apply to one of the MS degree programs or Advanced Certificate in Risk Management?

2. Can I be accepted to the program on a part-time basis?
Yes. Working students are encouraged to attend part-time. The M.S. degree must be finished within 5 years.
3. Can I finish the program in one calendar year?
Yes, students starting in the fall and attending full-time, having met all undergraduate prerequisites, will be able to complete the program in one calendar year (Summer, Fall and Spring semesters.)
4. What are the minimum requirements for admission?
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university; 2 letters of recommendation; 500 word essay describing one’s interest in studying Risk Management; and a QC graduate application. Applicants are encouraged to submit a resume in their application package. Applicants may also be invited to interview for the program.
A standardized exam (like the GMAT or GRE) is not required.
For international students TOEFL or IELTS is required but may be waived if holding a degree from a US college or university with permission of the director. While it is possible to be accepted into the program with a minimum TOEFL score of 80, or IELTS score of 6, applicants who score below a 100 on the TOEFL IBT, or below a 7 on the IELTS, will be required to register for the Graduate English as a Second Language (GESL) course during the first semester.
Foreign transcripts must be evaluated by ECE or SpanTran (TEC).

5. How competitive are admissions?
In most cases applicants who are accepted into the program have distinguished academic backgrounds and or significant relevant work experience. Admission is competitive.
6. How can I prepare to start the Risk Management Program?
7. Is this program eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension?
Currently (as of 2023), several of our programs are eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. The degrees that are eligible are: MS in Risk Management-Finance, MS in Risk Management-Dynamic Financial Analysis, and MS in Actuarial Risk Management.
8. Can I begin the program by taking course as an undergraduate or as a non-matriculated student?
There is an Accelerated Degree program which allows undergraduates to take up to 12 credits of graduate coursework as an undergraduate student. With planning, undergraduate students in related majors can finish their bachelors degree and also receive an Advanced Certificate in Risk Management. Speak to the Risk Management Program Director for more information.
9. I already have an M.S. in Accounting from Queens College. How many credits are transferrable from this degree to the M.S. in Risk Management?
Evaluation of transfer credits is determined by the faculty advisory committee.
10. For international students, what is considered Full-Time?
International students must take 9 credits (3 classes) per semester. Only one class per semester can be online. The others must be in-person or hybrid.
11. How will I register for courses once accepted?
After matriculating, students may register for courses through the Office of Risk Management.
12. Are courses offered in the summer terms?
Yes, usually RM706, RM714 and RM711 are offered in the summer terms.
13. Can I combine Risk Management and Accounting degrees?
No. Students may matriculate into only one degree program at a time. However, some credits may be transferrable between programs.
14. When are classes held?
Classes are held once a week in the evenings and occasionally weekends (for Accounting classes).
Monday-Thursday: either 6:30pm-9:20pm or 6:55pm-9:45pm.
Many courses are typically offered as online and hybrid, with a mixture of online and in-person meetings.
15. When will I be notified about whether I am accepted into the program?
Applications are reviewed by our admissions committee and we accept admission applications once a year for Summer/Fall matriculation. Submit your application as early as possible and we will do our best to give you a decision quickly.
