The Queens College Fashion and Textiles Collection
The historic Queens College Fashion and Textiles Collection was established in the 1950s. It now houses over 2,000 dress, accessory, and textile objects spanning three centuries from both domestic and global communities. These objects range from the quotidian to couture, from anonymous home-made ensembles from the 1800s to the couture Yves Saint Laurent gowns. The collection is actively used in our courses, and our program is unique in providing hands-on experience to undergraduate students in curation, exhibition, research, cataloguing and collections management practices with historic objects. These learning opportunities offer our students unprecedented training usually reserved for graduate level studies, skills that are essential for our students to acquire competencies used in museums and archives. Many of our undergraduates go on to graduate studies and work in locations including the Tommy Hilfiger archive, the New York Public Library, and other museums and archives.
