Medical Insurance Billing and Coding Certificate Program

Do you have an interest in becoming specialized in insurance billing and coding for physicians, hospitals, urgent care centers, skilled nursing facilities, rehabilitation centers, faculty practices, radiology-oncology, and varied medical centers? You can also pursue a career as a health insurance account representative or medical-legal assistant. The Queens College Professional Certificate Program in Medical Billing and Coding will provide you with the training you need in order to work in a variety of health care and business-related settings. We focus on the individual training needs of future medical billers and coders who seek employment, as an account and coding specialist, throughout the United States.

Please note: If you have previous health care experience or are currently employed in a health care-related occupation that does not require a formal certificate, the courses listed below may be taken on an individual basis.

NOTE: All above courses must have a minimum number of students in order to run.

ALL CURRENT students in Medical Insurance Billing and Coding who have not taken ICD-10 are now required to take both AH-215 and AH-216.

As of the Spring 2016 semester, all new and current Medical Insurance Billing and Coding students are required to take AH-958, Pharmacology, Theory and Calculations in place of AH-116, Fundamentals of Medicare, etc. If you have taken AH-116, you are not required to take AH-958, but the course is highly recommended.

Clinical Medical Assistant

Consider the career possibilities and personal satisfaction of a rewarding profession as a Clinical Medical Assistant by enrolling in the Queens College Professional Clinical Medical Assistant Certificate Program. Medical assistants perform important administrative and clinical tasks for physicians in private and faculty practices, ambulatory settings, urgent care centers, specialty health care settings, and hospital outpatient services. Your responsibilities will include all aspects of front desk administration, obtaining and charting patients’ medical histories, vital signs, specimen collections, performing electrocardiograms, and ordering and maintaining health care supplies. CMA’s also prepare patients for physical examinations, assist the physician and/or health care provider with various procedures as well as educate and schedule patients for specialist referral, hematology, oncology and radiology services, and surgery and diagnostic testing. Employment opportunities for Clinical Medical Assistants are steadily growing throughout the United States.

Exam Prep Programs

AH-611 Certified Procedural Coder (CPC) Exam Preparation
Enroll today if you want to pass the CPC certification exam and get national recognition as a certified procedural coder. Topics include an intensive review of how and when to use specific CPT and HCPCS codes, coding scenarios, sample test questions, problem solving and analysis of codes as well as test-taking strategies. Course is taught by a certified procedural coder and upon completion, you can register to take the CPC exam. 20 hrs.

Prerequisite: AH-215, AH-216, AH-202, AH-250 and/or one year field experience

AH-621 Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) Exam Preparation
Enroll today if you desire the knowledge necessary to pass the CCS certification exam and obtain national recognition as a certified coding specialist then this course is for you! Referencing your acquired knowing of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and ICD-9 coding, this test preparation class will focus on an intensive review of how and when to use specific ICD-9 codes and ambulatory CPT-4 codes, as well as a review of different coding scenarios, which mirror those given on the CCS examination. Time management techniques and test-taking strategies will also be covered. 20 hrs.

Pharmacy Technician Exam Preparation

Queens College Pharmacy Technician Exam Preparation provides a comprehensive course of study, while preparing you to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination. Upon passing this examination, you will receive national certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certificate Board (PTCB), which enables you to work throughout the United States as a Pharmacy Technician. The prerequisite for this program is a high school diploma, GED, or TASC documentation.

The Pharmacy Technician Exam Prep contains four separate courses, each focused on specific topics which are essential components of the job functions of a pharmacy technician. Pharmacy technicians are employed in a variety of health care settings. They work in hospital pharmacies, chain and independently owned drugstores, mass-merchandisers, ambulatory and clinic pharmacies, mail-order prescription pharmacies, home infusion companies, large faculty practices with on-site pharmaceutical services, and corporate pharmaceutical companies. Pharmacy technicians are supervised by licensed pharmacists and are responsible for assisting the pharmacist by serving patients upon presentation, labeling and filling prescriptions, managing day-to-day pharmacy operations, mixing and compounding medications in various forms of administration to patient, monitoring drug inventory, providing patients with counseling regarding medications and contraindications, ensuring that patients receive proper medication upon pick-up, prepackaging bulk medications, communicating with patients and insurance carriers to verify prescription insurance eligibility and insurer’s formulary, computerized documentation and billing, obtaining refill authority, discussing reason for denial with patients, and obtaining co-pay or full payment as indicated.

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS.GOV) states that employment for certified pharmacy technicians is expected to grow 9 percent from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. This expectation is much greater than the average of other occupations surveyed through 2016. Pharmacy technicians are able to work on a full-time or part-time bases, depending upon the needs of their employer.
