This special program has talks from some of the software companies that CUNY supports as free downloads. The program includes presentations by Microsoft, Mathworks(matlab), Mathematica, Maplesoft, and the Adobe Creative Suite. Each company will do two 40 minute presentations, most oriented toward research uses, the other on educational enhancements. Please see below.

We will be inviting other STEM disciplines to this meeting, since it has broad interest.

You MUST REGISTER for which talks you are interested in attending since space is limited.

  • How colleges and universities can teach essential skills for success in the age of automation and digital transformation.

RM C204 | Google Education Programs and Tools, Steven Butschi, Google

Join to hear how professors, students and researchers are taking advantage of Google’s education programs and tools, including Google Cloud Platform EDU grants and the collaborative tools of Google Drive and Google Docs. You’ll learn how you can receive free educational grants for storage, compute, big data and machine learning, among many others, in courses and research, such as robotics and computer science. You will also learn tips and tricks for using G Suite (Google Drive, Hope Docs, etc.) to collaborate and save time.

Steven Butschi

Steven leads the Higher Education team in North America that works with universities and colleges to adopt cloud computing products, such as Google Cloud Platform and G Suite for Education. His passion for education led him to serve as a volunteer with iMentor and Citizen Schools. In fact, his mentee who graduated last year from NYC DoE is now a CUNY student!

RM C204 |  AWS Educate, Shanika Hope and Mike Bryant

AWS Educate (awseducate.com) is Amazon’s global initiative to support Cloud learning for students and faculty across the world. AWS Educate is a free portal with a robust set of complimentary tools, resources, and AWS Promotional Credits for students, veterans, and educators to skill up on the cloud and prepare for future careers. The program offers no-cost curriculum materials aligned to cloud-related career paths, AWS credits to allow access hands-on learning of AWS tools and services, and a Job Board to connect students with cloud employers.

This session will offer faculty an overview of the AWS Educate portal, with an emphasis on:

  • curriculum resources and activities to integrate into instruction
  • AWS Educate Starter Accounts, which provides students access to an AWS account without the need for a credit card
  • AWS Educate Classrooms, a new feature that allows educators to easily provision a lab environment for hands-on learning
  • Cloud Career Pathways, which allow students to explore a variety of cloud-related career fields
  • AWS Educate Jobs Board, to connect students to thousands of cloud-related jobs from Amazon and other employers around the world

Shanika Hope, PhD – Head of Content and Research, AWS Educate

Shanika is a former K-12 school administrator, educator and university professor and possesses over 25 years of experience in education. Prior to her current role as the Digital Content Strategist and Researcher at Amazon, Shanika’s previous roles include serving as the Vice President of National Urban Markets Initiatives at McGraw Hill Education; Vice President of Curriculum and Instruction at Discovery Education, as well as time as an Assistant Superintendent of Elementary & Secondary Education for the Washington, DC State Education Office.

Mike Bryant – Educator Community Manager, AWS Educate

Mike started his career as a high school science teacher who embraced using technology to inspire future scientists. He took that passion for technology integration and worked 12 years with the education division of the Discovery Channel creating a global community of educators with the goal of sharing best practices and connecting educators with the best resource, each other.

Mike currently serves as the Educator Community Manager for AWS Educate. He is actively working with educators globally to provide support and resources for students eager to learn more about cloud computing.

RM C203 | The Maple Programming Language, Daniel Skoog, Product Manager, Maplesoft

In the past three decades, Maple has evolved from a symbolic computation engine to a fully featured mathematics software package that includes natural math notation for input and output, easy-to-use tools for creating interactive documents, and access to a vast programming language with commands for mathematical, scientific and engineering computation.

In this talk, Maplesoft staff will provide an overview of Maple, including:

  • Maple’s use for research including recent trends in symbolic analysis, visualization, code translation, data analysis and user interface construction
  • Maple’s use in education including ways that Maple provides students with coding experience that supports their overall learning in mathematics and computer science

Newcomers to Maple, as well as experienced users who are interested in trying out the latest we have to offer, are welcome.


RM C204 | Teaching and Learning with MATLAB in the Modern Classroom, Div Tiwari, Customer Success Engineer, MathWorks

MATLAB and Simulink provide a flexible and powerful platform to develop and automate data analysis and simulation workflows in a wide range of domains and industries. Recent innovations in the product make it easier to use it for teaching, learning and collaboration across disciplines like engineering, sciences, medicine, business, etc. In this session, we will discuss the latest MATLAB-based tools and resources that make it easy to teach and learn in the modern classroom.

His technical interests are in the domains of statistics, machine learning, modeling and simulation, image processing, complexity theory, and astrophysics. In his current role, he partners with academic institutions to help enable the most effective use of MathWorks products for curriculum and research.

RM C203 | The Mobius Online Platform, Andrew Rourke, Director of Teaching Solutions, DigitalEd

The Mobius Platform extends the power of the Maplesoft technologies to bring STEM-courseware and testing and assessment into the online environment. Already employed by CUNY’s Elementary Algebra Exit Test, Mobius has full application within Computer Science for both teaching concepts and formative assessment of student knowledge.

In this talk, DigitalEd staff will provide an overview of Mobius, including:

  • The tight product relationship between Maple and Mobius
  • Mobius’ use in education, including ways it provides students with opportunities for online exposition, interactivity and assessment to support their overall learning in mathematics and computer science
