The UMBUNTU Program

The Office of Student Development and Leadership runs a mentorship program for first year students of color entering Queens College in the Fall and Spring semester. The UBUNTU program was established in 2020 with the purpose of retaining students of color as they matriculate through the College. UBUNTU supports its students by pairing them with upperclassmen mentors and exposing them to campus and cultural resources. This program is inclusive and all students are welcome to participate!

UBUNTU Mentor Job Description Fall 2023

UBUNTU Mentors are required to support and encourage new first year students of color as they adjust to Queens College. Mentors will conduct one-on-one and group meetings with their mentees. UBUNTU mentors will serve as resourceful and knowledgeable guides for their mentees through self-motivation and a positive attitude.

UBUNTU mentors have the opportunity to:

  • Build a healthy mentor/mentee relationship with first-year students of color
  • Develop and strengthen their leadership skills
  • Play an instrumental role by leading and guiding the first-year students of color in their first year at Queens College
  • Use UBUNTU program as a reference for future career goals
  • Earn up to $300/month for their full participation in the program

CORE Qualifications

Core Qualifications

  • Be in good academic and student conduct standing
  • Have a positive attitude about the UBUNTU program and Queens College
  • Willingness to be resourceful, learn, and share information
  • Demonstrate excellent leadership and communication skills
Mentor Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Support students in a smooth transition to Queens College by developing and maintaining a professional mentee/mentor relationship
  • UBUNTU mentors are to serve as a resource to first year students of color by helping them identify and use appropriate campus services
  • Mentors must attend and participate in training sessions and events hosted by the
    UBUNTU Program Committee
  • Mentors must check in with their mentees via email at least once a week and host 1:1
    session with their mentees at least once a month
  • Mentors are required to host group meetings with their co-mentor and mentees at least
    twice a month
  • Mentors can meet with their mentees, whether in a group or 1:1, in person
  • Mentors are required to work independently as well as collaborate effectively and
    positively with their co-mentor
  • Encourage mentees to attend program events hosted and planned by the UBUNTU
    Program Committee
  • Serve as a positive role model, both in the UBUNTU program and within the Queens
    College Community
