Goals
- Support first-year students in navigating their inquiries and connecting with resources
- Create time management, study and academic exploration plans with first-year students using program provided curriculum
- Participate in programming and professional development to grow in ability to support students and contribute to community of care
Job Description
- Serve 3 hours per week supporting first-year students in answering questions about the college, learning about resources and creating time management, study and academic exploration plans
- Mentor students how to navigate common first-year struggles
- Approach first-year students with care, empathy and guidance
- Be attentive to students visiting FYE study space and computer lab
- Display comfort using CUNYfirst, Brightspace, EAB Navigate, Degreeworks, Schedule Builder, T-Rex and other CUNY online systems as applicable
- Actively participate in a pre-semester training, mandatory monthly trainings and select professional development workshops hosted during free hour (Monday/Wednesday 12:15-1:30)
- Openness to learning about and sharing academic and professional opportunities available to first-year students
- Communicate professionally with team of program administrators, office staff and fellow peer mentors
- Comfortable asking for support when unsure of how to navigate an inquiry
- Strong team player who takes initiative, remains motivated and has the capacity to reflect on how to best support first-year students
- A friendly demeanor with a good sense of humor
