English Language Requirements

For degree programs, proficiency in English is required of all applicants whose first language is not English and who were educated in a country where English is not the official language.

Application Deadlines
Applying to the English Language Institute (ELI) – an intensive English program

For international students interested in attending a full-time course of study in English as a Second Language (ESL) within Queens College’s English language Institute. A TOEFL score is not required to apply. I-20s are available.

Applying to the Queens College ELI Path Program - a pre-matriculation program

For international students interested in attending Queens College and who meet all of the college’s admission standards except for language proficiency.

This is a pre-matriculation program designed to increase international students’ potential for success at Queens College through intensive English language training. Students accepted into this program are provisionally admitted to Queens College, but first attend the ELI. After meeting the progression standards, students matriculate into a program of study at Queens.

The required standards for matriculation into an undergraduate degree program are (1) achieving an ELI level of 7 or passing the ELI exam with a score of 100 or more and (2) sitting for CUNY’s Placement exam in Reading and Writing. The required standard for matriculation into a graduate program varies by department.
