Information for Students
Tips in advance of in-person sessions:
- Log into WCOnline to browse our availability and make an appointment ahead of time.
- Arrive on time, if not a few minutes before your appointments begin.
- Bring your assignment prompt and any notes or writing you’ve completed to share with your tutor.
- If you plan to work with a “hard copy,” consider printing it out ahead of your session.
Tips in advance of online sessions:
- Log into WCOnline to browse our availability and make an appointment ahead of time.
- Find a reliable place to meet virtually. Distractions like noise and unstable internet connection can interrupt your session.
- Have your assignment prompt and any notes or writing you’ve completed pulled up on your device.
- Be specific. It’s okay if you don’t exactly know what you’re hoping to gain from your session! Some topics you might ask for feedback on: the strength of your introduction, the integration of your sources, your structure, your syntax, or something else. Remember, we can help you understand and identify errors in grammar, but we do not line edit every sentence.
- Be present. Writing Center sessions require your active participation. You may also consider taking notes and/or making use of our many books and handouts.
- Be patient. Especially during virtual sessions, it can take a few minutes to get things started, and technical difficulties do happen. Ultimately, writing takes time and effort. Show patience to yourself and to us!
Policy reminders for walk-in sessions:
- Appointments may be booked up to 14 days in advance.
- Students may book up to 2 appointments per week and no more than 1 per day.
- All appointments shall end at 00:50 minutes or “ten ’till” the next hour, regardless of when they begin.
- New appointments may not be booked after 20 minutes past the start of the hour.
- After 10 minutes past the start of your appointment, you will be marked as a “no-show” and your slot will open to someone on the waiting list. After 3 “no-show” appointments, your account will not permit future bookings without an administrative override for the remainder of the semester.
Conduct reminders:
- All users of the Writing Center are bound to CUNY’s policies and procedures, including but not limited to the Student Code of Conduct, the Academic Integrity Policy, the Policy on Sexual Misconduct, the Policy on Drugs and Alcohol, and the Policy on Acceptable Use of Computer Resources.
- Anyone who does not oblige the QC/CUNY standards of conduct in the Writing Center space, whether in-person or virtual, may no longer be able to work with the QCWC.
The QC Writing Center upholds the CUNY Academic Integrity Policy, including the University Faculty Senate’s recommended changes regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence.
