Applications are now open for the Martin Nuruddin Scholarship

The Nuruddin Scholarship is named in honor of Queens College DTD alumnus Martin Nuruddin, who spent 44 years as a member of IATSE and was the Vice President of PRG Orlando, one of the largest theatrical lighting suppliers in the world. This $1,200 award, sponsored by his family, is to be given annually to one DTD student who is pursuing a professional career in technical theatre. Students who are interested in this award must apply, as well as fulfill the prerequisite of having gotten a job working in a backstage or design capacity in a professional summer experience, including but not limited to—summer stock, theatre/dance camp, professional productions in Regional or off-Broadway settings, festivals, etc. It is intended for this scholarship to be a salary supplement, and make it possible for you, the students, to take an opportunity that might otherwise not be financially viable.

The application can be found here. You can also access a list of some of our faculty’s favorite companies to work for here, though the list is certainly not exhaustive. Students should also do their own research for opportunities to work backstage this summer. Many companies are already hiring. Students who have additional questions about this scholarship should feel free to contact Ralph Carhart at ralph.carhart@qc.cuny.edu for more information. The deadline for this application is March 15, 2025.

Our office is open for in-person appointments on a limited basis. We can be reached by email, or by phone (718-997-3090). Please review the list of topics below for specific guidance about Major/Minor declaration, advisement, and other common issues that we can assist you with. For any other questions or inquiries please contact the department chair.

MAJOR AND MINOR DECLARATION INFORMATION

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREREGISTRATION AND ADVISEMENT

  • Majors in Drama and Dance should contact their advisor or Professor Edisa Weeks (edisa.weeks@qc.cuny.edu) for instructions on how to participate in preregistration. If you did not meet with your advisor prior to the instructional recess, you can request a phone or online appointment by emailing your advisor. You must complete your advisement before you are allowed to preregister.
  • All preregistration and permission only registration will be done online. We will not have in person appointments. If there is an issue with your registration you may be asked to make a phone appointment to resolve it. You may leave questions about registration on the main office voicemail- 718-997-3090.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REGISTRATION TO A PERMISSION ONLY COURSE

  • All permissions are granted by the professor of the course. Please contact that professor by email to receive permission in writing.
  • If you are a transfer student who completed a prerequisite at another university, please be sure to attach a transcript, a catalogue description and/or syllabus of the prerequisite course, and please note that some courses require a prerequisite and an audition or interview so you may be asked to submit additional materials (this affects Acting IV, Dance/Drama Collaboration, and MFA preparation Workshops)
  • Acting IV requires permission and the prerequisite course and MFA preparation is an invitation only course. Please email Professor Claudia Feldstein (claudia.feldstein@qc.cuny.edu) for more information.
  • We do not waive prerequisites or add anyone to courses that are already fully enrolled in this program.
  • Classics Majors registering for Drama 201 need a letter from your advisor confirming that you have some background in Dramatic Literature. It may be addressed to Professor Weeks.
  • Drama Production and Dance Production are audition only courses, and the auditions will be held in August.

AS ALWAYS, THERE IS NO OVERTALLY FOR ANY DRAMA OR DANCE COURSES FOR ANY REASON

  • We will not respond to any email or voice messages requesting entrance to a closed section of any course.
  • If a section is closed because it is full then you cannot take that course.

The Department of Drama, Theatre & Dance offers the study of the subjects appropriate for a liberal arts degree. A balanced combination of theory and practice aims at giving an understanding of the arts of drama, theatre and dance that can serve as a foundation for graduate study. Every effort is made to provide scope for the development of individual talent and skills as a preliminary step for those students who intend to pursue future conservatory training for a stage or dance career.

The department offers strong, diversified academic programs in theatre (covering history, literature, acting, directing, stage management, design, and technical theatre), and dance (modern, ballet, tap, Asian and African dance, choreography, and history). Each year, on our three stages, the department presents a wide range of five fully realized productions. These are dramas and comedies, classic and modern plays, new plays, musicals, operas, and dance concerts. Under the guidance of faculty and guest directors and designers, student actors and dancers perform for audiences drawn from all segments of the college community, as well as Queens neighborhoods.

There are also several opportunities annually for student actors and dancers to produce and direct work under faculty supervision. In addition to providing opportunities for students to major or minor in Drama, Theatre & Dance, the department devotes many of its offerings to courses that satisfy mandated general education requirements in the liberal arts. Moreover, non-majors participate regularly and extensively in all aspects of our production program as actors, dancers, technicians, and backstage crew members.
